5. Cité-Soleil, Port au Prince Haiti
Cité-Soleil (“Sun City”), is a foul slum ruled by gangs on the outskirts of Port au Prince, Haiti. This place is infested with mosquitoes, garbage and feces. For many years, drug lords have controlled this place with no police force to protect the people. This town has no armed violence, crime, illiteracy, insanitary conditions etc. Even today, one has to pass through an armed UN checkpoint to enter the slum.
4. Ciudad Juárez, Mexico
Ciudad Juárez is the largest city in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. In 2009, the city was crowned the murder capital of the world. It is the hub for all the drug wars. It is not a safe place for women due to cases of rape, sexual assualt, murder and human trafficking. Police officer are either corrupt or afraid to even leave their stations.
3. Medellin, Colombia
During the 1980’s, Medellin was the most violent city in the world. Pablo Escobar’s drug cartel was at a all time high. Pablo Escobar was killed by the police in 1993 and the crime rate went down significantly. But unfortunately, new drug cartels started operating and started a gang war to seize more territory. Today, tourist’s have to be very careful when travelling to this city as there have been many cases reported of rape, kidnapping and murder.
2. Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya
Kibera is a city on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. It is known to be one of the worst slums in the world. The government has ignored this place due to which there is a lot of unemployment, no electricity, water pollution etc. Kibera has a big problem of AIDS and drug problem. People do not even get the basic necessities of life.
1. Detroit, Michigan, USA
Detroit was once known as the “Motor City”, but due to the fall of the American automotive industry the city faced a huge economic problem. In 2013, Detroit declared bankruptcy, approximately $18 billion in debt. In recent times, Detroit has been known as one of the “Murder Capitals” of The United States Of America. A recent survey done by the US department of Justice published that the top three extremely dangerous neighborhoods in America are all located in Detroit.
