I Should Use WHAT as Shampoo? Surprising Tips for Healthy Hair

An a-bun-dance of factors contribute to healthy hair. (Apologies for the pun.) While it would be nearly impossible to incorporate all of them into your daily life, there are many ways to repair dull, damaged hair just by putting the kabosh on bad habits, or by loading up on biotin-rich foods. Hair’s what you’ve got to do (again, sorry):

Stopping Damage Before it Starts

First up are some free tips that don’t involve expensive restorative shampoos. Avoid washing hair more than a few times a week, because washing too
often depletes essential oils. Also, hot water gives hair a dry, brittle texture, and, unsurprisingly, so does using the hottest setting on the blowdryer. Now for the part that costs money but is worth it in the long run: use a protective shampoo or spray before heating up with styling tools (yes, that includes your dryer!).

A Sul-Fate Worse than Death

Swapping artificial products for organic ones makes a huge difference. Most shampoos are made with sulfates. These are responsible for that bubbly lather that makes you feel squeaky-clean — and for your dry hair! Consider being gentler on your hair by going sulfate-free, or even ditching traditional shampoo altogether.

Au Naturel

Instead of traditional shampoo, try coconut oil, baking soda with apple cider vinegar, or avocado. Yes, avocado! Its healthy fatty acids moisturize the hair, and the protein makes hair grow strong and thick. You may be skeptical that natural concoctions could get the dirt and oil out of your hair, but in fact, even water alone can do this, if it contains enough minerals. In the modern day, we’ve trained our scalp to expect heavy chemicals and constant washing, and to produce oil accordingly; when we stop that harsh routine, the scalp adjusts. In olden times, hair care consisted of a dip in the creek. Now, we’ve got plenty more tools and knowledge at our disposal, but it’s still wise to remember the adage: “Less is more.”
